I don't know about you, but I hate the look of stray wires. I love having a high-tech home, but I don't want to see our technology. I recently went on the search for the perfect two-tone cabinet to tie our existing modern/rustic coffee table to the traditional feel of the rest of our living room. As I fell deep into the rabbit hole of my online search, I found several two-tone cabinets I loved, but the only one with dimensions that worked in our space was this one. The only problems: (1) it was a wine cabinet, and (2) it was not media-ready. I desperately wanted to make this cabinet work in our space, so I removed the built-in wine rack and added a clean 2" hole to ready this cabinet to hold our router and stereo system. Learn more about my process below.

  1. Select a cabinet Any old cabinet will do. You can even consider adding media holes to the back of cabinet or dresser drawers to be able to easily connect your cords or charge your devices out of site.

  2. attach wood hole saw to your power drill To create a cleanly finished hole for your wires, you'll need a wood hole saw. Luckily these are pretty inexpensive and can be purchased at most any hardware shop. The saw actually screws into your power drill like any other drill bit. Simply twist the chuck (i.e. the adjustable end) of your power drill counterclockwise to create space for the drill bit, place your saw bit into the chuck, and then turn the chuck clockwise until it is tightly fitted around the end of the wood hole saw.

  3. Drill hole in the bottom back of the cabinet Be sure to press the power drill into the cabinet as you drill. Don't be afraid to give it some "oomph." Without enough pressure behind the drill, you risk the blade jumping around and scuffing up the inside of your cabinet -- not the clean look we're going for.

  4. Clean up the sawdust No explanation needed for this step, though I will say that this part is one of my favorites because there's just something so soothing about the instant gratification of vacuuming up a pile of sawdust.

  5. Pull wires through Pull your wires through your freshly cut hole.

  6. reconnect wires Set up your technology with the quiet joy of knowing that your days of seeing your tech clutter will soon be over.

  7. enjoy not seeing your wires Close your cabinet and say bye-bye to those unsightly wires.
